FRANCESCO XIUMÈ

I was born in 1966. In 1985 I entered the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Catania where, in 1991, I first obtained my degree and then the qualification to practice the profession. In 1992, after a year of voluntary attendance at the Thoracic Surgery of Careggi Hospital in Florence, I attended the Specialization School in Thoracic Surgery of the University of Ancona, first under the severe and loving guidance of Prof. E. L. and then under that one of Prof. A. F. and in 1997 I obtained the Specialization Diploma in Thoracic Surgery. On November 12, 2008 I then obtained the Specialization Diploma in General Surgery at the relative School of Specialization of the same University. Since the academic year 2005 - 2006 I have been collaborating as a "contract" teacher with the Specialization Schools of Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Orthopedics. After a long period of work as a contractor, since September 2001 I have been on duty at the S.O.D. of Thoracic Surgery of the "University-Hospital Umberto I - G.M. Lancisi - G. Salesi" of Ancona as a medical director. This ward is the only accredited thoracic surgery operating unit in the Marche Region. As part of the Operational Unit I work for, I deal, like my other colleagues, with the evaluation and surgical treatment of all pathologies, oncological and otherwise, of the thoraco-pulmonary district (chest wall, pleura, lung, airways and mediastinum). I am particularly interested in minimally invasive surgery and, in particular, in the uniportal VATS, which we started to experiment in June 2005 and which gives us ever greater satisfaction and in the use of laser. In our Operating Unit we pay particular attention to an accurate pre-operative evaluation, so that we can offer the surgical option also to patients otherwise considered as non-operable, and to the control of post-operative pain. All with the aim of reducing as far as possible morbidity and peri-operative mortality and of discharging the patient perfectly self-sufficient and in the best possible conditions. I am a member of the Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SICT) and the European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS). All my daily medical activities are however based on the human approach with the patient and on the sincere relationship with colleagues. I have participated in more than 1500 general and thoracic surgery operations, a good part of which as first operator or tutor.
